Entry requirements: No previous experience is required but we would advise a reasonable GCSE or O Level grade in History as the concepts in the History course follow on and use some of the knowledge you will have already gained.

This specification is designed to encourage students to:

  • Develop their use and understanding of historical terms, concepts and skills
  • Organise and communicate historical knowledge and understanding in different ways, arguing a case and reaching substantiated judgements.

Course Content

This course is divided into four units:

Unit 1: Russia 1917-1991: From Lenin to Yeltsin

Unit 2: Mao’s China 1949-1976

Unit 3: Protest, Agitation and Parliamentry Reform in Britain 1780-1928

Unit 4: The Cold War, its Development and its Demise 1945-1990

Qualification Information

To achieve the full History A-Level you will be assessed across the four units. All units will be assessed by three paper-based examinations and coursework. A more detailed breakdown of the assessment details is provided below:

Paper 1: Breadth study with Interpretations-Russia 1917-1991: From Lenin to Yeltsin (Code: 1E)

  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Weighing: 30% of A-Level
  • Assessment format: 3 Essay questions

Paper 2: Depth study – Mao’s China 1949-1976 (Code: 2E.1)

  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Weighing: 20% of A-Level
  • Assessment format: 3 Essay questions

Paper 3: Themes in breadth, with aspects in depth – Protest, agitation and parliamentary reform in Britain 1780-1928 (Code: 36.1)

  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Weighing: 30% of A-Level
  • Assessment format: Two-part question, depth essay and a breadth essay

Coursework Option: The Cold War, its development and its demise (1945-90) (Code: 04)

  • Type: Coursework
  • Weighing: 20% of A-Level
  • Assessment format: Detailed essay of approximately 3-4,000 words

 

Please note that if you choose to study this A-Level you will have to sit your exams in one of our recommended centres. This is due to the administrative arrangements for submitting coursework.

Method of Study

The course comes to you as a paper-based pack delivered by courier.

You will be given guidance through the Study Guide on the nuts and bolts of studying and submitting assignments.

Postal assignments cannot be accepted without prior permission from the tutor.

Online Version

Method of Assessment

The course contains a number of assignments which your tutor will mark and give you valuable feedback on. We call these Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs).

Exams:

You will need to take the standard A-Level examinations in order to fully complete this course. The examinations run on specific dates which can be obtained by visiting the Edexcel website. You will be required to book these examinations yourself and so we can provide a list of A-Level test centres around the country.
