Entry requirements: You do not require any previous knowledge of philosophy to enroll onto this course, however, you will need to be able to read and write fluently in English.

This A-Level Philosophy specification is designed to enable candidates to:

  • Develop transferable skills
  • Develop an understanding of key philosophical concepts, themes, texts and techniques
  • Develop the ability to reason, form their own judgements and contribute to the process of debate
  • Show students how to consider philosophical problems

TOPIC 1: EPISTEMOLOGY

  • What is epistemology?
  • Perception as a source of knowledge
  • Reason as a source of knowledge
  • The limits of knowledge

TOPIC 2: MORAL PHILOSOPHY

  • Normative ethical theories
  • Applied ethics
  • Meta ethics

TOPIC 3: METAPHYSICS OF GOD

  • God’s attributes
  • Arguments relating to the existence of God
  • Religious Language

TOPIC 4: METAPHYSICS OF MIND

  • What do we mean by mind?
  • Dualist theories
  • Physicalist theories
  • Functionalism

 

You will need to take the standard A-Level examinations in order to fully complete this course. The first opportunity for you to sit these exams are in 2019, these dates can be obtained by visiting the AQA website. You will be required to book these examinations yourself and we can provide a list of over 400 A-Level test centres around the country.

Qualification Information

To achieve the full Philosophy A-Level you will be assessed across the four sections. All units will be assessed by two paper-based examinations:

Paper 1: Epistemology and Moral Philosophy

  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 3 Hours
  • Weighing: 50% of total A-Level
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Assessed: Topics 1 and 2
  • Assessment format: Five questions on epistemology and five questions on moral philosophy

Paper 2: The metaphysics of God and the metaphysics of Mind

  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 3 Hours
  • Weighing: 50% of total A-Level
  • Total marks: 100
  • Assessed: Topics 3 and 4
  • Assessment format: Five questions on the metaphysics of God and five questions on the metaphysics of Mind

Method of Study

The course comes to you as a paper-based pack delivered by courier.

You will be given guidance through the Study Guide on the nuts and bolts of studying and submitting assignments.

Postal assignments cannot be accepted without prior permission from the tutor.

Online Version

Our online courses are fully digitised versions of the paper-courses, so you can study on any PC or smart device when connected to the internet.

As with the paper course, your online learning programme is completely flexible, so you can study at a pace that suits you.

Method of Assessment

The course contains a number of assignments which your tutor will mark and give you valuable feedback on. We call these Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs).

Upon successful completion of the exams you will receive an A-Level in Philosophy issued by AQA. All examinations must be successfully completed to gain a full A level. We have chosen this syllabus as it is the best suited to distance learning. Please note the first opportunity for you to sit these exams are in 2019.
